ONE YEAR REFLECTION - ON THE ROAD WITH JUST ME
This time last year, I was driving away from Colorado College, unsure of exactly what was going to happen. I had a summer job, but then what?
I didn't know that "...now what?" would be my primary phrase for an entire year.
11, 314 SOLO MILES
179.5 SOLO HOURS
This is what I have done since graduation. I've driven, a lot. These numbers don't include driving from Colorado Springs to San Luis Obispo with Kyle, touring in Seattle/British Columbia in the Eurovan with Odell Fox, or the dozens of European flights. This is just Kendall and her CRV, place to place, job to job, experience to experience, driving across this great land.
It's been an unreal year. Here's a little visual recap.
MAY 2015 - THE LONG DRIVE HOME - 2,366 MILES
From Colorado Springs to Poulsbo, Washington. Stopped included California and the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene. A big thanks to Kyle Lutz and The Prisoner of Azkaban for getting me to San Luis Obispo in one day.
JUNE - AUGUST 2015 - ALASKA
why: to work at Sitka Fine Arts Camp and The Southeast Alaska Conservation Council
my favorite shots of the summer:
I made a music video for Odell (Raph Shapiro) while working at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp, in the dead of night while all the campers were asleep.
I took Juls and Danny's engagement photos in Indian River - click for all of them
I worked with the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council to make WE EAT FISH! This is probably the biggest project that I have ever worked on (so far), and am excited to have it here for you. With help from the irresistible Lee House, I filmed and edited this 26 minute documentary. You can learn more here.
AUGUST 2015 - THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST
click the photos below for the full visual stories from these special days
SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2015 - GREECE
why: to work for Colorado College's block abroad, Romantic Comedy and The Blue World
While in Athens I was able to work with the Salvation Army and assist their efforts to help refugees stranded or moving through the city.
OCTOBER - NOVEMBER 2015 - EUROPE
why: to see my parents and edit We Eat Fish!
I spent most of the time locked up in my mom and dad's cute little German flat, editing We Eat Fish, but was able to sneak away on weekends. Countries travelled: Germany, Switzerland, Croatia, Italy. Special thanks to Paul, Margeaux, and Sophie for making our German Thanksgiving festive and heartwarming despite our stringbean turkey, and to William for being a good host and only laughing a little when I first saw the The Duomo and almost fell over.
DECEMBER 2015 - NEW YORK
why: to record Odell Fox's Brooklyn Apartment Show
CHRISTMAS 2015 - POULSBO, WASHINGTON
why: because that's still home to me
JANUARY 2016 - COLORADO
why: to work for the Colorado College Office Of Communications and shoot a new project for Arielle Mari
I got to see some homies and check in with your favorite professional buskers, The Tejon Street Corner Thieves. I had the pleasure of interviewing them for Grits Collective, a group you should really check out.
FEBRUARY 2016 - SEATTLE/BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA
why: for Odell Fox's Moonshiner EP Tour
FEBRUARY 2016 - MISSOULA, MONTANA
why: for the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival
My senior thesis documentary, God's In The Garage, screened at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival on February 28th in Missoula. I was honored to have two of my main men at my side for the entire weeklong festival - many a pant leg was ripped, crossbows were fired, whiskey smoothies were made...and that was just the first night. Here they are, the legendary and stunning Sawyer Connelly and Bennett Krishock.
MARCH 2016 - NEW YORK CITY
why: to shoot "I Hate You, Please Come Back" with Partners In Cinema
Bennett and I trekked (flew) to NYC to work on a fiction/doc for our friend Kennan Moving Company, as he recorded the grooviest song you've ever heard, "The One."
I also had the honor of photographing NYC musician and goddess Sandflower as part of the project. Here's one shot:
MARCH - MAY 2016 - AUSTIN, TX
why: to work on a new indie feature from Bob Byington, "Infinity Baby"
there were also some buddies around
Odell Fox moved to Austin around the same time so we got to horse around a little more:
Infinity Baby - the movie I worked on in Austin. Starring Nick Offerman, Kieran Culkin, Martin Starr, Kevin Corrigan, Trieste Dunn, Megan Mullally, and Kaley Wheless.
MAY 2016 - THE LONG DRIVE HOME (AGAIN)
important stops in Montana
So that's it - after a full year of living on the road, for no more than a month and a half in one place, I finally made it back to Poulsbo, and I finally unloaded my car.
AND THEN COVERED BACK TO BACK WEDDINGS
stay tuned for those.
I OWE A LOT TO A LOT OF PEOPLE
Thank you so much to those who took me in and let me crash on your futons, couches, floors, and beds. It wasn't always easy, and big love to those who reminded me what a home feels like and who snuggled me when I felt especially unstable. For those who snuck me food from work or gave me leftovers, or let me fall asleep during conversations when I was jet lagged, and who helped me fix my flat tire in Denver on January 1st. From the top, I hope I'm not forgetting anyone: Kyle, Jacci, Rawley, Alex, The Hitchcocks, Daven, Lee, Lisa, Jim & Debbie Jo, William, Paul, Margeaux, Sophie, Raph & Candice & Julian, Bennett, Annie Tor, & Eliza, The Walls, Stacie & Chuck, Stanley, Richard, Zachypoo, Heather, Jack & Nate, Nick & Brooks, Ben, Mike, Will, Ham, Martha & Hager, Sawyer, Mike, Danny & William, Oliver, Autumn, Nicole, Lauren, Jenner & Franny, Jack, Jeremy, Kaley & Wake, Veronica, Kieran, Peter & Sandy, Kelly & Brittany, and Jakey. I love you guys.
NEXT - ALASKA
I will be spending the summer in Sitka, Alaska, working for the Sitka Conservation Society. Lee and I are going to make loads of art and we can't wait to share it with you. Until then...
